People are trying to imitate this round all of the time. Also modernize the AK ammo you are going to use for this application. Upgrade to a rail system and put a dot sight on it. Plenty of reliable magazines every where. I vote Socom for your question, but suggest you check out a FAL if given the chance. I've owned a couple AK's and am still not sold on their reliability, given the troubled rifles were Century's, but ever had a bad extractor? Where the empty slips BEHIND the carrier group or gets lodged between the bolt and a cross pin, not fun. Take both rifles and drop them barrel first on the deck, see which one stays closer to zero. Not sure about the durability comparision between an M4 and a M1A. As far as adaptability and parts, you can purchase rails to mount optics for all three, but check weld will need some attention. They all use rock in mags, but the AK has no standard bolt hold open. Charging handle on left, for the M1A and AK you have three options all of which are slower and more cumbersome than the FAL, left hand over, left hand under or abandon fire control and use the right. Safety operated by the thumb, not inside the trigger guard or leaving fire control to manipulate as the AK, even with a middle finger sweep only my thumb still touches the grip. In my experiences I'd take a FAL over either the M1A or AK. Someone versed with an AR15 can jump on an AR10 with little learning curve. Of course variety is the spice of life, but in a bug out situation, is it better for a small group or individual to carry multiple calibers all of which operate in a different manner? For the SHTF scenario, I'd rather carry weapons of at least the same type.

If you purchased an FAL (which are great rifles), you would have 3 different manual of arms, 3 different magazine types and two calibers. But the smaller 16 inch and M1A socom might have different results when compared.

How much do you gain by going with longer barrel lengths FALS? I was never interested in a full size FAL bc a full size M1A has better accuracy. I heard the FAL had alot of issues when it came out? Can you please give me the pros and cons of a FAL vs M1A Socom vs AK 47? Whats the deal with the FAL? Is it more reliable than the M4, M1A etc? Does it come close to hardcore long term Ak47 reliability? Figure a FAL will do better at dropping game and shoot flatter at longer distances. I want something that will function long term in the field in bad conditions with limited cleaning supplies. I like that its more durable than an M4 but not impressed with its long term durability. I want one rifle that does urban and longer range woods combat. I have a regular M1A and its too long and heavy for urban and woods combat. I currently use an AK but am considering a DSA 16inch FAL with a folding stock or an M1A socom.
